Keep in mind
Names help you find a category. Confirm the full product name, manufacturer or brand, code, variant and pack contents before comparing quotations.
Pattasu, crackers and fireworks: understand the context
‘பட்டாசு’ is commonly written as pattasu or pattaasu in Latin letters. ‘Crackers’ is often used broadly in Indian shopping conversations, while ‘fireworks’ is the wider English catalogue term. These are useful ways to begin a search, but they are not exact product specifications. A result for a broad word can include many different effects, sizes and assortments.
Tamil spoken names and English packaging names do not always match word for word. Spellings also vary between shops. If the result is unclear, share a link to the intended item rather than repeating different spellings of its nickname. Ask the seller to confirm the product code and pack shown in that link.
Common names you may hear in a shop
The table gives conversational equivalents for browsing, not a certified translation of a particular manufacturer's product. Regional usage can differ. PESO's authorised-fireworks reference includes English names such as sparklers, flower pots or fountains, rockets, and wheels or chakras; the Tamil terms below are editorial language help.
Use these names to open the appropriate catalogue category, then read the actual item details. A category reference does not establish that every product using that word is approved or currently permitted in your location. Always check the original manufacturer information and current requirements.
| Tamil name | Common English catalogue term | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
Sparklers | Variant and pack count |
Flower pots / fountains | Exact product and label |
Ground chakkar / wheel | Code, size and quantity |
Rocket | Product identity and instructions |
Gift box / assortment | Itemised contents |
Size words and promotional names need more detail
Terms such as small, big, deluxe, special and premium can help distinguish items within a seller's own list. They do not necessarily define the same specification across different brands. When comparing two shops, match the complete named product and pack rather than assuming that two ‘big’ variants are equivalent.
Likewise, ‘fancy’, ‘family pack’ and ‘kids special’ are broad merchandising terms. Ask what the product or assortment actually contains. ‘Kids’ does not mean suitable for independent child handling: PESO advises that small children should not handle fireworks. A cheerful package illustration cannot replace the original instructions.
Translate the quantity as well as the product name
A conversation may move between piece, packet, box and carton without making the conversion clear. Ask what one quoted unit contains and how many of those units you are requesting. The Tamil word ‘பெட்டி’ alone does not establish a standard count. Write the quantity beside the seller's exact unit description.
For example, a question such as ‘இந்தப் பொருளின் ஒரு பெட்டியில் எத்தனை உள்ளது? விலை ஒரு பெட்டிக்கா?’ asks how many items are in one box and whether the price is per box. It is a clarification template, not an assumption about any product. Keep the answer with the quotation so the same ambiguity does not reappear later.
A simple bilingual enquiry format
Start with a link or product code, then ask for the full name, pack contents, requested quantity, availability and complete quotation. You do not need polished English to make a clear enquiry. Consistent product references and numbers are more useful than a long message containing several similar names.
In English: ‘Please confirm the item in this link, contents per box, current availability and the quotation including applicable taxes.’ Ask separately about unclear charges and the validity of the quotation. An enquiry remains a request for information, not an online fireworks order.
Common questions
Are chakkar, chakra and wheel the same catalogue category?
They can refer to the same broad family of names, but do not assume every listing is an identical product. Confirm the full variant, manufacturer, code and pack contents.
Can I compare prices using only a Tamil nickname?
Use the nickname to find the category, then compare the exact labelled products. A photograph, item link or product code helps the seller clarify which variant you mean.
